The Soyuz uses a retrorocket to cushion the landing
It's a pretty clever system similar to the one they use to airdrop heavy equipment like tanks. Shortly before touchdown, a retrorocket fires to cushion the landing. It wouldn't be all that difficult to put a more powerful retrorocket on it to cushion the heavier load.
