FACT: The ISS is a white elephant.
FACT: There are no promises and
NO GUARANTEES that the ISS will produce science worth the financial investment.
FACT: The earth's atmosphere will [statistically] likely to be struck by an asteroid...or two...each with a multi-megaton yield [imagine one over heavily populated Europe or the N.E. US states] every 100 years.
FACT: Sometime in the future, a
mountain-sized, civilization destroying asteroid will strike earth.
FACT: Silo-based, or sub-based
ICBM's or Tridents would be useless
in trying to deflect a mountain-sized asteroid away from the earth.
ICBM's and Tridents are "suborbital"
vehicles that fall short of 17,500 mph
[and vertically wouldn't even reach 4000 miles up].
FACT: You need nuclear-tipped missiles
that can achieve escape-velocity to
SAFELY intercept asteroids millions of miles from earth..
OPINION: What about fitting
a battery of nuclear-tipped SRB's
on the ISS?
The ISS is already
traveling 17,500 mph...the SRB's
could easily boost those nuclear warheads another 7000 -8000 mph.

A novel and possible "planet-saving" use for the ISS.
