Shuttle fuel

A bit off the topic of the satellites, but I've always wondered if it would be possible to put a fuel tank in the shuttle's cargo bay to give it more range. I know it would require a fairly major plumbing job, but is there any other reason why it couldn't be done? (other than $$ of course)
