Actually, the Orbiter doe not use the SSME's for this purpose, as you suggest.
It uses the Orbital Maneuvering System. (OMS)
Instead of L0X and LH2, they use Monomethyl hydrazine (MMH) and Nitrogen Tetroxide (NTO).
