Re: Shuttle fuel and Buran
Last Year in Sydney I visited the exhibition of the Buran protype, equipped with jet engines to keep the flight going while they studied handling characteristics etc. (plus big ejector seats in case it *didn't* handle!) and in the cargo bay was a 45,000 litre fuel tank for the engines. Still lots of spare space to climb past it, but it was a big Mother.
Of course it's possible. But it's a bit more tricky to have a LH2/LOx supply for the SSME than kerosine for an air-breather.
