Re: Are we Doomed

Can humankind reach the stars?

Project Orioncould have lifted 10,000 ton payloads into orbit and carried them within the solar system; Mars trips would have taken less than two months with a crew of 150 people.

Project Daedaluscould have reached Barnard's Star in 30-40 years.

Both of these concepts used fairly well researched and quite possible (and relatively cheap) technology.

The way is there, but the will (so far) is not.

As others have pointed out, 500 million years is a VERY long time. Species simply do not last anywhere near that long. Our descendants may (if we're lucky) see that time, but they most certainly won't be Homo sapiens by then.
