I believe that technological progress coupled with Man's inherent aggression will do the race in fairly rapidly. Technology is cumulative, builds on itself, is passed from generation to generation.
Wisdom has to be learned by each individual in a slower, sometimes painful process. Not many get past ego considerations, yet they have access to the technology.
People write computer viruses which do as much damage as possible just for the fun of it. What will happen when they can write DNA just for the fun of it? That's not far off.
Some nut will write a prion or primitive virus for which there is no antidote, and turn it loose just to watch the results.
As a race, I don't think Man will make it very much longer, measured in centuries.
Obviously just a guess, but certainly if cloning can't be contained at this stage, DNA manipulation won't be able to be contained in 100 years.
Arf (and as far as the ROW, all the critters, that won't be a loss)
