A very good point
An impact of debris in orbit that shattered or broke tiles on the Shuttle would seem likely to leave a lot of small fragments floating around the orbiter. Such things are easily observed by astronauts who spend a lot of time looking out the windows. I know of no such observations, but I am not privy to transcripts of the daily conversations.
