I really like two ideas for these finds:
1) Intermixing between subspecies
2) HSS/N'Tal shared a subspecies relationship, and as climate changed to an HSS-body-friendly model, the two groups started to look more and more alike, possibly combined with intermixing.
I would like to believe this because it would be sad if poor old N'tal got eradicated by HSS.
The other part of the 3-prong mystery is where HE and JavaMan fit in. Some I have read even suggest that H. Erectus was a third subspecies, possibly representing the 'root' origin for the other two. Thats a cool notion.
Others argue that the social, technological and physical differences between the three exclude subspeciation and therefore intermixing. While HE was really simplistic in tools and art, we are finding HE and N'Tal are a lot closer than previously though... Even in average physical form.
Yeah, this is all really cool and things have changed amazingly in the last 10 years, faster than I can keep up!
