John and Tom make good points, and I'll throw in the third which is obvious: this is a snapshot and says nothing about WHO was the top ten percent say 20 years ago and who will be 20 years from now. In the extreme case, if the bottom ten percent BECAME the top 10% then what would be the complaint? As it is the rate of change may not be too great but as long as Music, sports and other pop culture vehicles make megamillionaires out of inner city kids and talent such as bill Gates can rise in one lifetime, things can't be all that bad.
