The logic of using a tried and true shape of a conical crew return vehicle is sound, yet the CSM stack should be looked at with a modular approach in mind. The Crew compartment could have connections that just don't limit it to LEO, the lunar orbital idea would get us back to the moon quick quick quick. Besides, instead of a SERVICE MODULE, how about a small module with retro packs of solid fuel, so the long term factors of being on orbit don't factor into the safety of the propellents?
