Yes, I think that an Apollo shaped crew capsule is probably the most benign way to transport people to and from low earth orbit. Burt Rutan was recently quoted talking, about his new space vehicle, as saying "he wanted a vehicle that could be thrown at the atmosphere in any attitude and end up pointed in the right attitude once it got some air going past it." (not an exact quote)
I don't think a Apollo shaped vehicle is quite that stable but isn't it true that, if it starts out in the correct attitude, it will remain stable in that attitude throughout reentry?
