Paul Spudis has an article in the latest Astronomy that suggest a return to the Moon is the only sensible thing to do and dismisses Mars with a whole bunch of inaccuracies...
A clue: If you build infrastructure like Paul suggests in his article you are looking at decades and hundreds of billions of dollars. If this kills Mars politically then it kills the Moon as well.
