The term "NEO" is generally taken to include long period comets. "NEA"'s is the term limited to asteroids.
Since you brought up Long Period Comets, it is important to note that Dr. Mazanek's system is particularly effective against them, providing a much oonger warning time than any other system.
This is important, as long period comets are beginning to be implicated in ELE's (Extinction Level Events)
