Democracy statement

You found a sentence somewhere and decided you didn't like it, and so trashed the entire website based on that. I'm not even sure which one it was.

Kanga goes on at some length defining the various governmental structures which derive their legitimacy from democratic methods, including the republic. When making a comparison among broad types of political entities, democracy is the term to compare with dictatorship and anarchy (which is what he is doing). Republics are democracies, but not all democracies are republics. Just ask Prince Charles.

*****
democracy, n. . . . Government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them or their elected agents; a state having such a form of government; in a restricted sense, a state in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them rather than by their elected representatives . . .[it goes on with the less-common definitions, including social democracy and the power of the proletariat]

republic, n. . . . A state or other political unit in which the supreme power is vested in the whole voting community which elects, indirectly or directly, representatives to exercise the power; any group of persons with a common cause.

New Webster's Dictionary of the English Language. Encyclopedic ed. Delair: 1981. pp. 265 & 815.

The convention of dictionaries is to list the more common definitions first, with the others in descending order of use. As you can see, democracy is defined broadly to include a republican expression, and is only later defined as a specific way of exercising power, such as the New England town meeting example.

We heard a great deal about the US being a republic and not a democracy when the Republicans were discrediting the popular vote majority Gore received by saying that the Electoral College vote was most important. They were, of course, legally correct: our government is set up that way. But to draw the artificial line and say that a republic isn't a democracy is just a fatuous, narrow, self-serving way to define them both.

Kanga didn't call an apple a dairy product. He called it a red fruit.

Mary Anne
