Hi, Phil--

One of the things we take very seriously in Libraryland is maintaining balance in the collection. That doesn't mean title-for-title, but it does mean maintaining quality viewpoints from as many sides of an issue as we can. It's easy to do. All I need to do is to buy things that annoy my opponents and things that give me heartburn in reasonably even amounts. I must make sure that the quality of the stuff I hate is as good or better than the stuff I agree with. The stuff to which I'm indifferent is even easier: I defer to expertise. Origami is not a controversial subject.

Mr. Kangas can, indeed, conduct bipartisan research, analysis and reporting. He can do this by deliberately giving himself heartburn.

Do you assume that a liberal cannot accurately report the opinions expressed by a conservative? Is this based on your observations of how conservatives report the opinions of liberals? ;)

Just wonderin'...
