and let's face it, this problem of worldwide Islamic fundamentalist terrorism hasn't been seriously addressed, and isn't going to be solved without a massive and sustained effort on many fronts.
Besides the practical steps the USA can take to help countries like the Phillipines more effectively fight Islamic terrorism, I fear that the US will in reality have no choice but to invade and quite violently overthrow the governments of Afganistan, Iraq, possibly Libya and Sudan as well. As long as terrorists like Bin Laden have safe havens, support, assistance from the savages running governments like the ones listed above, he and others like him will always be a mortal threat to the civilized world.
I doubt if other countries will actually fight along side us in the war, but we will need assistance from NATO and other allies, both during the war, and to assist in occupation afterwards, and a transition of these barbaric states to a possible UN protectorate status, like Kosovo, for at least a decade to come.
I realize that I'm doing nothing less than proposing the dramatic step of revoking the national sovereignty of several independant countries in the world. Well, tough sh!t. If people want to have a nation, and run it independantly, than don't aid and shelter terrorists who come and blow us up. We won't stand for it.

The goal should be to deprive the terrorists of their havens
