<Soviet Generals Doubt America Can Prevail in Afghanistan
I am getting tired of hearing the Russians say that we are about to involve our self in another Vietnam.
First, The US military is not the Russian military. With all due respect for their role in WWII and our long cold war stand off. The Russians have never proven themselves to be a great attack machine. They are a proven defensive army and a tenacious foe. We are better warriors, always have been, always will be.
Second, Afghanistan is not Vietnam. In Nam there was an almost infinite stream of fighters on the Ho Chi Mien trail with a lot of jungle and forest to cover the movement. The faster we killed them the faster they replaced them. I believe we can control the influx more effectively in Afghanistan.
The Viet Cong quartered themselves in villages with old men women and children. I am seeing the Afghan fighters in camps and most women and children in refugee areas or near the cities.
Until someone shows me an Afghan Ho Chi Mien trail, I say we defeat the finite enemy and accomplish the finite mission. Also, I think we do it with fewer civilian casualties than Iraq or Vietnam
I am not underestimating them. They are probably better fighters than the Vietnamese and if we learn from the Russian and British failures and find ways to fight them on our own terms, we will win handily but not without casualties and much sorrow.
JMHO, any other opinions?
The Russian Army
