Hi Mary Anne,
When the Taliban destroyed the statues, many protested about being scandalized by this rather than by the way women have been treated. True, what happens to the Afghan women is inacceptable; and voices were heard. There was a famous mode magazine ("Elle", maybe) that portrayed an Afghan women hidden inside her veil, on the frontpage. Let's hope that 6 lost years in their education and their dignity can be cought up without too damaging effects.
