In the military, "Aviation Week & Space Technology" is known as

"Aviation Leak & Space Treachery." They have a long history of publishing classified information. I do know firsthand of one case where they got it wrong. Back in 1989, there was a military launch of a Titan 34 from the Cape. Av Leak reported that the payload was one of my satellites, a DSCS-III. It wasn't.

I like to contrast Av Leak's attitude with that of "Armed Forces Journal" (AFJ) Back in the late 1970s, there was a black project being tested known as HAVE BLUE. These were 3 proof of concept vehicles that proved stealth technology worked. Somehow, AFJ found out about the story. The technology was so revolutionary that the DoD asked them not to publish and they didn't. They finally published their story in the September 1980 issue but only after Carter had announced the existance of stealth during his reelection campaign (he was being beaten up for being soft on defense). Imagine, having a major story like that and sitting on it to protect the national interest. ASJ did it. I don't know of too many others who would've. It was an excellent article, too. You might want to see if you can read it sometime. They were discussing stealth in the framework of the Stealth Bomber Carter had discussed but realized that fighter-sized stealth vehicles could be very useful at taking out air defenses. They didn't know that the F-117A project was already underway at the time. That project wasn't revealed until 1989.
