U.S. Military cuts under the Clinton administration:
709,000 Active Duty Personnel
293,000 Reserve Troops
Eight standing Army Divisions
97 major military bases
20 Air Force and Navy Air Wings
2000 combat aircraft
232 strategic bombers
13 strategic ballistic missile submarines with 3114 nuclear warheads on 232 missiles
500 ICBM's with 1950 warheads
4 Aircraft Carriers
121 Surface combat ships and submarines
Plus all of the support bases, shipyards, and personnel to sustain such a force.
In July 1997, in protest over administration policy, 24 military Generals retired. As a last ditch effort to address the issues of preparedness, and overall conditions of the military as a whole, these 24 Generals went to see Defence Sec. Wm. Cohen. After getting nowhere they all resigned.
Some of these numbers are also in a 1999 Mobile Riverine Force Reunion speech by Rear Admiral Bill Carlson. The rest of the speech is also worth reading.
I will be the first to admit that some Republicans also saw the military as an easy target for spencing cuts, and I will also be the first to admit that an effective nuclear force needs a lot fewer warheads than what we are talking about above. My main concern is cuts in conventional forces. In my opinion, we should have more aircraft carriers, at the very least.
Do we have the men and weapons we need?
