Re: People keep harping about planning future conflicts based upon the last war . . .

Well, until you're in the conflict, the last war is all you have to go on. Planning to fight a future war with future tech and future tact requires something we seem to be missing. The psychic ability to foresee exactly how a future war would be fought by future adversaries. Also, guessing the future and hoping you're right with the new plans you've decided to go with leaves you open for an assault based upon that which is forgotten -- the tactics and technologies applied in the last war. These can then be modified for the new environment. It's painful, but hands-on is the only way to plan and win a war.

Reality states we must go with what we know. Guessing is all well and good when you're picking a gift for a friend, but when lives are on the line, we have to know what the best course of action would be. This is derived from past tactics that worked.

Dan (we should leave future war plans to sci-fi writers)
