I don't recall seeing that D-Day interview so I can't comment on it. Dan Rather has done some moving broadcasts on historical topics like D-Day. He also cut his teeth as a combat journalist during Vietnam, so he knows about the military. That puts him ahead of most of the "journalists" who've come along in the past 20 years or so.
As for the Libya raid (Operation El Diablo Canyon) back in 1986, I do remember seeing a news report while the raid was underway that a group of bomb laden F-111s had taken off from England and the speculation was they were bound for Libya. I remember that very well (I was in the Air Force at the time) and was furious. One of those planes didn't make it home and two men died. I used to watch mostly NBC news at the time so the odds are that's where I saw it.
