From your link, "Forces of the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance said they had entered the northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif on Friday and were massing further south to advance toward the capital, Kabul."

They've been known to "enhance" their stories before. I'm hoping they did take the city but I don't know if it has been confirmed.
