<Try and find a single philosophical or political position held by a communist that a socialist would not agree with. Free elections? Like I said, socialists hold them only because they have to, not because they prefer it.
Socialism in Europe works completely within a free-market world. The European Union (and the Euro in a few weeks-next month, btw!) were encouraged by socialists like Mitterrand, Suarez, etc...The EU is not at all like the Soviet Union. It's a huge market of 300 million people using one single currency and living in democracies. Sometimes (like today more than 10 years ago), the majority is more conservative, sometimes it's more liberal but, anyway, any politician knows he can't expect to stay in power without deserving it (through elections), so he knows in advance the name of the game.
