India knows that her nuclear arsenal at the present time is far larger and superior to Pakistan's, and may just feel that if there's any time to have a nuclear war with Pakistan, now's the time, as horrible as that sounds.
Pakistan has only a very small number of nukes and might manage to kill a million Indians or so but that's it. India may be tempted to absorb the blow, then all but wipe out Pakistan in the nuclear counterpunch. Pakistan can't threaten the existence of the Indian state, at least not yet, but could some day if allowed to continue to develop nuclear weapons.
Couple this grim strategic thinking with India's growing exasperation with Islamic terrorist attacks in the Kashir (70,000 killed in the war), and you begin to understand why India may be thinking the unthinkable.
Bottom line for the US - get on the phone with Russia and China, and try to stop this war from happening. Now. And pull those US troops out of Pakistan immediately!
