Hi Tom,
Thanks for posting the link.
The real problem and I've alluded to it several times in stories and elsewhere is that the leadership in these countries is almost eager to use the bomb.
They have very few of the qualms the west and the soviets did in the cold war.
One can say this is what happens when primitive nations get hold of nuclear technology - and you would be right.
Think about it Pakistan has 140 million people in its borders - about half that of the US. India has well over a billion people.
The leadership has their fortified bunkers and network of tunnels they have been building for the past two years intensively.
If an all out, use every last nuke, nuclear exchange occurs between these nations - India will likely survive with about 100 million people and Pakistan will have a few thousand survivors.
The US wanted to acquire Pakistans arsenal, but they dispersed the weapons and stepped up security prior to US action.
The Pakistani leadership is tenuous and the control of these weapons could easily fall into the hands of Pakistani extremists within the government itself.
Civil defense in the US is Priority#1. It is only a matter of time before the US is hit by some sort of atomic terrorist attack. This is the new reality -and it requires calm and measured actions to ensure the minimum loss of life.
Contrary to popular belief - terrorist nukes in the heart of a major US city would not kill more than perhaps a million folks immediately. The radiation and fallout, however - would kill and maim millions of others in surrounding areas.
These other millions are avoidable deaths and are what the US civil defense effort must strive to preserve by means of new fallout facilities throughout our cities.
The US capital and major branches of government are due to be moved by 2030, or sooner, to a safer locale in the center of the US, not open to tourists or other unnecessary folks - and DC, the White House and the Capital buildings, Supreme Court, etc. will become large museums for the nation.
This New Washington will preside over the US and be far more secure and defensible than the existing free-for-all and huge ghetto DC has become.
There are plans to restock our supplies of geiger counters, civil defense gear etc. Now under the auspices of 'homeland defense' the civil defense service will be reborn. It is just a matter of time before you or I can wear the HD armband and hardhat ;-)
Yes ebay is home to many sellers of old CD gear from shelter signs to old shelter ration kits. (which are probably unhealthy to eat;-)
As usual, the 2000 millenium bug was not what we needed to fear - but it is man's hatred of man - which leads us to the brink - and behind this hatred stands one of the greatest threat to man's growth and survival - organized religion.
Yes, the hatred between parties here in the US seems insignificant to the organized bigotry and core hatreds fostered by religion.
God says kill the infidels!
Kill the heathens!
Let the grounds flow red rivers with the blood of our smited enemies!
This sort of archaic stuff seems like the lines for a bad movie. Yet it is all to real in these primitive nations - inhabited by primitive peoples.
Can we educate all these BILLIONS in time to avert nuclear catastrophe...
Can we forcibly civilize 4/5ths of the barbaric planet?
Can we loosen the ignorant chokehold of religion which is strangling these savage peoples in its persistant deathgrip?
It is unlikely.
Which leaves a future which I do not like to contemplate.
Either the US and the west is destroyed by savages and the remains of our cities become decadent villages inhabited by swarms of primitive folks ....kneeing in obeissance to some fancied god(s)....
...or the US and the west, Russia and China eventually decimate these regions and a new vile hate and police state emerges over the rest of the world, making Nazi Germany appear wholesome in comparison.
Meanwhile, the worlds many doctor Frankensteins perfect human cloning in the hideouts of the Nazi's - South America...and unleash the genetic weaknesses which will help defeat a century of medical progress and the longer lives humanity takes for granted.
The runaway diseases of Aids and Ebola and West Nile will spread to civilized regions as these refugees from fallout flee from city to city.
The fallout itself, from even a limited nuclear exchange - could easily leave us with Chernobyl like birth defects among millions of newborns.
Ok...are you depressed yet? ;-)
Now for the positive side...
(all things have one)
It may indeed be possible that a nuclear exchange revitalizes the humanity in man and these various religious leaders see the error of their books and past teachings - and rewrite them just as St. Jerome did in 400AD. Scratch out all the god fury, kill, smote stuff - and teach a more sane religion - based upon true love and compassion for all people - for all mankind.
This then spreads and soon after several generations these folks forget the thousand years of war and hate that have existed prior to this new illumined state.
Perhaps technocracy, by means of computers, television etc. can pacify these folks and turn them into vegetables - in a way the US has been pacified. In twenty years of television 50-70, TV changed us from a generation of do-ers to a generation of sit-on-our-kiesters ;-)
We do not need to be dropping bombs - we should just build cable stations, pipe in MTV and let them do their damage.
The kids watching Howdy-Doody and Bozo were easily pacified - the kids watching MTV and VH1 were easily pacified.
It should only take twenty years or so to get these regions pacified as well...and we can always expedite the process...have Boeing build a million TVs for every cruise missile they would otherwise build - and deliver them - we could have these regions docile as kittens in five years or ten tops!
Just get some proper content
A-TV - African/Arab Television
"I want my A-TV!"
Get Dell and IBM back on the defense net - churning out cheap computers made in China under contract - and we are well on our way to nipping the problem of the third, fourth and fifth world in the bud.
Well, I've ramble on long enough...
Best wishes,
