Houses for "bums"
<Habitat for Humanity, which as far as I can tell receives little or no government funding, is not building houses for the guys who talk to fireplugs and sit in doorways. They are building houses for families, which participate heavily in work and financing. My daughter participated in a similar program in Mexico last year with our church.
I see this program as a sterling example of a true private charity, which deserves support. And while I am no fan of Jimmy Carter's politics, he deserves credit for being willing to get some dirt under his fingernails instead of standing in Congress screaming for taxpayer money for housing before buzzing home in a limo.
