<I think the backlash will be terrible. Read Pat Buchanans book on the changing demographics. (I've only read the reviews.) There was a terrific backlash against Newt after '92 which helped get Clinton elected in '94, and I suspect there will be a similar backlash to such an unrepresentative administration. I don't think Clinton was electable except for the Contract with America.

Clinton won his first election in 1992, largely by pretending to be the fantasy Democrat that the left had been dreaming of for so long. The most ethical administration in history.

The Contract With America was put forth by the Republican House before the 1994 elections, which resulted in the most overwhelming Republican victory that had been seen in decades. They ran on principles, and it worked. Had they remembered those principles in the next elections, it would have worked again. The Republicans have held--barely--the House and Senate since then. Until the Daschle coup, of course.

The Republicans are voting in a primary here in California next Tuesday, with RINO Richard Riordan being rapidly overtaken by real conservative Bill Simon. It will be instructive to see how this comes out, and how the general election comes out this fall. Will principles work again?

As for Buchanan's book, he may be right. I personally think this country has a better than even chance of being a European-style People's Republic in twenty years, and the Democrat dream will be finally fulfilled. The part that really pisses me off is when America collapses and pulls the rest of the world down with it, everyone will blame capitalism.
