Pedophiles have immature, repressed, and inappropriate sexual urges. These can be directed at boys or girls or both.

"Out" homosexuals have come to terms with their own sexual issues and seek adult companionship and sexual involvement.

The all-male structure of the Roman Catholic priesthood is less likely to attract those attracted to females. This explains the low number of lesbian priests. ;)

The requirement to repress sexual urges (as in the vow of celibacy) is very attractive to people who would rather not deal with those urges for their own reasons. It further discourages a mature acknowledgement of sexual dysfunction.

Just ask yourself who you would rather leave your daughter and her friends with: a man with a healthy adult relationship with a woman, or a man who doesn't date and still lives with his mother at the age of 40.

Now think of it in terms of any adult-to-adult relationship. The openly gay man with an adult partner is not the profile of a pedophile. The secretly gay man with no adult partner and limited emotional connection to his own sexual urges is.
