and Bush Jr can expect the same kind of jazz his dad put up with when he tried to explain the facts of life to those folks: 7,000,000 or so Palestinians aren't going to simply "disappear"...

A good overview of the evolution of US/Israeli ties is available in the book "Dangerous Liasons", if I remember the title correctly,(that's was about 5 years ago).

The current rift in US-EU ties went in exactly the opposite direction during the "Suez" Crisis, when France, Britain, and Israel attacked Egypt, and the US (Eisenhower) told them to stop. Colonialism died hard in Europe, and the US later went on to get burned by the French in Vietnam...

Since Bush Jr has announced a policy of "non-involvement", the thing to do in this case may be to let Europe carry the ball, and watch from the sidelines...
