Unless they need the deep pockets of the US to purchase Israeli settlements. Another problem solved for the US is that any solution will irritate someone, and if the EU does it maybe there can still be support for other US actions over there.
I, too, saw Brezhinsky on the McNeil News Hour. Was extremely impressed with his grasp of that situation, far more than when he was in government. Balanced, thoughtful and understanding while deploring the actions of both sides.
