Let's say

THE COPS THOUGHT THERE WAS SOMEONE IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD WHO WAS A CRIMINAL. NOT NECESSARILY YOU, BUT YOU MIGHT KNOW A CRIMINAL. THAT CRIMINAL IS A DASTARDLY FELLOW, WE ALL AGREE.

Clearly you would tolerate the police force invading your house, arresting you because you live in the same country as the bad guy, forcing your wife and kids outside, trashing the place, and then heading off to the neighbors to do the same thing because, after all, there might be a criminal in the area. And you might even know a criminal.

Now, if one of your neighbors who thought this was wrong had the guts to take a shot at them (you wouldn't, because it's OK, remember?),

THEN THE COPS WOULD BE JUSTIFIED IN BLOWING UP HIS HOUSE, DRIVING OVER ALL THE CARS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD WITH TANKS, TEARING OUT PHONE LINES, AND NOT ALLOWING ANY MEDICAL AID FOR THOSE WHO MIGHT BE HURT.

I said I didn't want to believe it. You do. I'll just accept it.
