Pipe-bomb suspect heads to court

It’s too bad people got hurt. I can’t help but think he could have made every point he wanted to by planting a viable bomb and just exploding a primer, or something.

And, there’s a story here. You just don’t buy the stuff, make the bombs, and drive all over the Midwest leaving them in mailboxes because your Wheaties got soggy or the mail was late.

This took time and left a trail. He had to research at least the initiators on the web, buy the initiators, buy the powder, and buy the nipples and caps, all of which conceivably could be tracked.

Then he had to put them together without blowing himself to bits (not all that simple with that sort of bomb – the heat of tightening the caps can ignite any trace of powder in the threads) and drive all over Creation stopping at mailboxes long enough to insert AND arm them.

“The student paper at the university, the Badger Herald, reported on its Web site late Tuesday that it had received a letter from Helder postmarked Friday in Omaha.

“In the letter, signed by Helder, he said he is willing to die for his cause and threatened the lives of others.

“I will die/change in the end for this, but that’s ok, hahaha paradise awaits!” the letter said. “I’m dismissing a few individuals from reality, to change all of you for the better, surely you can understand my logic.”

“The letter, titled “Explosions! A Bit of Evidence for You!” detailed Helder’s philosophies on life and death.”

I’VE BEEN SO WRONG ON THIS ONE I may as well saw the limb off completely. What you wanna bet they go for a modified “Twinkie” defense. He either stopped taking lithium or an anti-depressant, or started. If it was that he started something like Prozac or Paxil or Zoloft, he could wind up suing them. (I agree that would be nonsense.)

Or that he’s bipolar and was depressed or that he’s bipolar and was manic. That sort of thing.

Interesting.
