PS
Just after typing the McCarthy response, on CBS there was a news program replaying an interview with Arthur Miller, the playwright who married Marilyn Monroe. He wrote "Death of a Salesman", "The Crucible" and a number of other things. it's the anniversary of something, I didn't catch that.
Miller ran afoul of McCarthy, lost a lawsuit and was sentenced to the slam. The suit was overturned on appeal.
Anyway, Miller was asked about those times. He said that at one point McCarthy told him, Miller, that he, McCarthy, would drop everything if Miller would arrange for McCarthy to have his picture taken with Monroe.
