"Yeah, but you know and I know that what would have happened after the Great Revolution is that the workers would still be working the mines for 25 cents a day, and dying at 35. The only difference is that the Party Leaders would be raking in the goodies instead of an American corporation, and to add insult to injury, the measly 25 cents would no longer be worth anything in the now-empty stores.
In addition, now they would be persecuted by secret police for bitching about their situation."
First, it's economic system. Not political. Second, things like a job, health care and housing are regarded as civil rights under some communist systems. What they had may not have been much, but it was available to citizens. Not so in many capitalist countries.
Check out medical care in Mexico.
Second, there were no stores even this way. People would have to walk a long, long ways to buy something. My friend told me one family made it's entire living carrying kerosene up from a source, and selling it.
The excesses of some societies have been grievous. Terrible. Don't seem to affect the average schmuck, though. And when they talk about how Afro-Americans have been treated here, how Native Americans were treated, how Japanese-Americans were treated, we don't sound all that super ourselves. Many societies in their formative years don't seem to have been kind.
Propaganda is propaganda. Theirs and ours.
