We aren't talking about "damage". And we aren't screwing over kids, particularly.
We are confusing a Christian icon, the word "God", with our country. The things I remember are "God AND Country", not "God IS Country".
If it's two separate entities, God and Country, why not let the little folks pledge allegiance to Country, and leave God, the way the Founding Fathers wanted things, out of it.
As far as that goes, it wouldn't hurt to add "and loving our mothers", either. "One nation, under God, and loving our mothers, indivisible - - - ".
No need.
I wonder how enthusiastic people would be if in the interest of acknowledging the diversity of our nation and it's religious freedom, including the right to no religion, that the kids would pledge "under God" one week, "under Allah" the next, "under Jehovah" the third, and so on. And leave it out another week.
Probably not.
It just seems silly to try to fuzzy it up. This is a matter best left to Iran and the other theocracies. They can do it.
Now that I think about it, what does "under God" mean, anyway? Under the rule of God, the care of God, the benevolence of God?
Beats me.

More silly than nonsense.
