If Europe honestly believes that war there is a thing of the past and their approach is superior, then there's no reason for the US to keep some 80,000 military personnel there. Suggest bringing them home and see Europe's reaction.
Since 1945, we've spent over 1/3rd of our defense budget each year to protect Europe. We've done a similar service for Japan, and as is the case with Germany, much of it was done to placate their neighbors who were worried about those countries remilitarizing. In the interim, they've enjoyed the luxury of not having to pay for their own defense, so they spent the money for other things like modernizing their industrial base or expanding social programs. In a way, they remind me of college kids who think they're all grown up while depending on Mommy and Daddy to pay their bills. In that case, it's little more than a prolonged adolescence without responsibility for taking care of yourself.
