Well, lawyers defend both sides, don't they?
A lawyer defending against his own "interest" being alone in his case, could attract a lot of publicity and recognition, enough to compensate for the "loss" he would have inflicted to his own profession.
But anyway, we have le "Barreau" which is an organism (of lawyers) controling the ethical behaviour (among others) of their peers.
