We tried to get Hitler that way too. But it didn't work and like Saddam they end up living in a bunker paranoid.
Much of the footage you see of Saddam is filmed underground. He makes about as many public appearances as Elvis or Jimmy Hoffa.
If you look at the wealthiest nations in the world, ironically, they are the nations whose clock was cleaned by the US military. Germany and Japan had a huge advantage in being decimated and occupied. All the factories in Germany were new ones, using modern technology. They could catch up and even outpace America for their limited resources.
Saddam deserves his day in court too - like Milosevic. The fact that the US helped create a Frankenstein does put a high responsibility quotient on the US to rectify things and make things better for the Iraqis.
An invasion force will not be engaged in a house by house shoot out. The German civilians did not fight the US inasion forces - only the soldiers did. The same will be true in Iraq. Civilians will be in their homes and the soldiers, the Republican Guard and Saddam's personal guard will be the targets and the combatants.
Yes, Saddam is a sickie who will huddle women and children near all his prized military targets. He will parade their deaths on the media. However someone so obviously in contempt of his own people is all the more a reason he must go. For if he can sacrifice his own nation's women and children - how much hesitation do you think he would have to killing America's or Europe's women and children.
If I could personally escort out the non-combatants from Iraq...I would. However, Saddam knows we are not after his people. We are after him. Many of his underground bunker/residences are under the heart of Baghdads populated areas. Human shields are his modus operandi.
Thats one of the major factors being debated of a large invasion versus a small tactical deployment.
Some think a large army rolling in (Desert Storm redux) will encourage folks to lay down their arms (if they have them) while others think a smaller force can effectively take over Baghdad.
Which ones will cause lower Iraqi civilian deaths? Which method can be sure of achieving its goal?
Bush has authorized teams to take shots at Saddam if he should surface. But Saddam knows this and so he lives like Hitler after '43.
An Iraq not hindered by UN resolutions and trade restrictions will be a robust and healthier Iraq. In many ways a US invasion would elevate most Iraqi's quality of life massively within five years of Saddam's expulsion.
US firms will flock to the region when stability is assured and while you haven't heard this phrase yet in the media...expect to hear it pretty soon:
The golden triangle of the middle east: Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Israel.
The formation of an economic golden triangle in the middle east will speed development in the region faster than the spectacular Marshall plan did for post WWII Europe.
A Palestinian state can also be formed, when we no longer need to spend billions on defense of Israel from Saddam. This should hopefully once and for all put an end to the most virulent of the conflicts.
Saudi Arabia's leadership will be empowered - because the fall of Saddam will send shivers through the fanatical muslims the same way the fall of the Taliban did in Afghanistan. Jordan will be able to relax and prosper instead of playing the middle road all the time.
A moderate, capitalistic region with multi-faiths will emerge and prosper. Four generations from now the US flag will not be burned with contempt and ignorance but be treated by educated, literate children with thanks.
Most muslims are devout, peaceful people. Most Iraqis are too. The few often mess things up for the many.
Middle east liberation and peace is truly at hand.
