If we really must point fingers, I would have to say the largest flaw to the way the nation is run is that we keep having humans handle it, from the voter on up to the president. Getting the human element completely out of politics would be a good first step.
I believe that the Corporate and Political Americas are merely searching for their levels. They are both inherently evil, but only to the point humanity will allow, just as both at inherently benevolent, but only to a point the voter will allow. And the real world (all of it) continues to rear its ugly head, forcing both Americas -- on pretty much a daily basis -- to acquire new tactics for their global negotiations.
If you’re looking for a pure America, that disappeared the day Jefferson handed over the draft of the Constitution for congressional review (recall it was written, reviewed, amended, and approved by British citizens, not U.S. citizens).
It’s been downhill ever since -- and here we are. It ain’t pretty, but it does work -- mostly. The trouble today are the legislators who cannot seem to fathom how things managed to get the way they have, even though they were key-players on the road to today. Trouble is, it does have to eventually stop. I don’t think we’ve ended the downhill slalom, and if we go much further, we’ll end up with a government that simply cannot function, because it’s gotten so tied up in its own tape.
Now, if you’re looking for a pure politician, we’ll get there. All we need is to press forward with artificial intelligence (my Dad says it already exists on Capital Hill).

No monkey (politician) ever took a banana (bribe) it could not reach, and no banana (bribe) that could not be reached was ever taken.
