Some info

There's a lot of good stuff on the Web left over from that era when we were prepared for disasters. This site is informative, although like most such sites, they are also trying to sell you something.

At some point it became Politically Incorrect to think of surviving a nuclear attack. Once survival become Officially Inconceivable, fallout shelters, food supplies, and stored radiation detectors became officially irrelevant, and were scrapped. This was, of course, nuts, even just considering the number of potential radiation hazards other than all-out nuclear war, but at least it put a number of good surplus radiation detectors on the market at e-bay and elsewhere, where I picked up a set last year. If you want to be really careful, you can get a fully-tested and calibrated surplus detector at some places for a much higher price.

This reminded me of the movie "Testament," which was a pathetic anti-nuclear parable about a woman and her children up in Marin County who suffer and die, wandering around in staggering butt-ignorance of various simple ways in which they could have protected themselves. The townspeople wander around in the open. Large brick buildings like the school remain empty. No one takes the slightest effort to guard themselves from fallout, or takes the simplest precautions.

Favorite line (as I remember it): "Mommy, there's dust all over my plate." "Just wipe it off and eat, honey."
