Evil has been pounded into the public for centuries by the religious elite.
Personally, I like the term evil. It's just a matter of stepping out and looking at the word squarely. To replace it with any other word is to say "evil" should only be spoken in religious terms. I (a devout agnostic) hate religious terms, so I'll keep my words and use them as I see fit.
"Evil is as evil does, sir."
Gassing your own people's villages and wiping out whole populations on your home soil for the sole purpose of testing your WMD is not depraved. It's evil.
