<Evening,
I'm afraid I find your post a bit of a nonsequiter. What does the dot-com bubble have to do with the opportunistic alignment of Republican ideology with government deficits?
--Robert
Hi Robert,
In a nutshell, everything. You see the government used the dotcom inflated stock values to finance the miraculous deficit recovery. The taxes on stock worth millions and sometimes billions was pretty hefty - and so the dotcoms would sell a bunch of the inflated stock to pay the taxes (Since they certainly couldn't come up with that much cash any other way) levied by the IRS boogieman.
This brought windfall $$$$ into the coffers of the treasury department and were the sole reason the deficit was "plugged".
The dotcom illusion shatters, all these companies paying huge taxes go belly up and suddenly Uncle Sam's Treasury income drops to the floor.
Now with the tax cut and increased military spending - the republican monsters are being blamed for deficit spending and ruining the economy, when it was really the vast change in Treasury income levels that made the deficits "reappear" with such force.
So in other words - its not that congress or Clinton was fiscally conservative in 98-00 - far from it - but only the treasury income was way up. Now spending has been increased significantly due to the terror attacks and subsequent usage of all our military muscle and domestic infrastructure - but it is really noticeable only because of the dot com implosion.
It would be a tragic irony to see a bunch of dead protesters in a lifeless city. We see them on the sidewalks, half fallen over a paper stand, and as we close in we see their cold, dead hands still clinging to posters which say "No blood for oil!" or "It's the economy stupid!" after a biotoxin nerve agent has wiped everyone out. Leaflets which encourage voting for the democrat congressional candidates can be seen blowing down the streets coming to rest in the gutter. The only sound left...the whispering wind.
(Yeah cheap shot - I know. I should turn that into a flash movie for the RNC and collect my 100 grand ;-)
