How could one nation eat 27.4 MILLION POUNDS of whatever the heck is "sandwich meat"?

Who feeds that stuff to immature human beings? NO ONE does that! They couldn't use it on Death Row, "cruel and unusual", and all that. And no mature human being not in some backwash of Africa or Asia would eat it.

I would think that to make 27.4 MILLION pounds it would have enough preservative to have a sign "Best if eaten in this century", because they sure won't sell that much in this decade.
