OK:
Robert Byrd is (a) a Congressman (b) a Senator.
Lyndon Johnson was (a) a Democrat (b) a Republican.
Rep. George H.W. Bush voted (a) for (b) against the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Andrew Johnson was (a) a Republican (b) a Democrat, and was also (a) pro- (b) anti- slavery.
I'm surprised you had to go back that far, to Lincoln, to find a Republican who stood up for blacks. I can do better than that.
You will notice that Wallace left the Democratic Party as the party's embrace of the civil rights movement made his presence more odious both to him and to the party.
There has been great ballyhoo about Senator Byrd's remarks while Congressman. Care to date any of them? I won't hold Bush Sr.'s vote against him because he was young, and people change as they age. I would hope you would give Byrd the same benefit.
But I doubt it. Care to prove me wrong?

Mary Anne
PS-- The remark about sheets had to do with the presence of extremists at large gatherings of people. That was the thread of the conversation. Keep track.
