Re: Voting test

You may be right on the Constitution. The whole point of the document, as I understand it, is that just because a freedom for citizens is not listed does not mean it is not protected. But there were many restrictions on voters originally, many unreasonable or even downright rotten, and they apparently thought Amendments were required to get them the vote.

What percent of voters do you think would fail your test of who should vote?

Good question. REAL good question. I don't have any test in mind that I think would give the desired results. Raw IQ and education have little to do with real intelligence and common sense. There are garbagemen who dropped out of high school that I would much rather see in the voting booth than most college professors. How the heck do you quantify common sense, civic responsibility, and other intangibles that make a good voter?

Heinlein wrote "Starship Troopers," where only those who had given at least two years of military or civil service could vote. Could work. Or not. I'm not seeing veterans as sterling examples of character in the last few weeks.

I got nothing. All I know is universal suffrage isn't giving us the government we need.

In a facetous moment, I once suggested that everyone should get one vote, and then an additional vote would be added for every $50,000 in taxes actually paid (not just assessed, and avoided through loopholes). The guys who buy the gas get more say in where the car goes. The $50,000 number is arbitrary.

But while that would put some brakes on the Eat the Rich movement, it isn't a final answer either.
