"The only way to treat them is (for) what they are -- international killers. And the only way to find them is to be patient and steadfast, and hunt them down. And the United States of America is doing just that. We're in it for the long haul."

WASHINGTON -- OC
An American missile fired from an unmanned CIA drone killed six al-Qaeda suspects in Yemen, U.S. officials said yesterday.

The missile strike, which killed a top associate of Osama bin Laden and five underlings, expands U.S. President George W. Bush's war on terror and is the first overt strike outside Afghanistan. Qaed Salim Sunian al-Harethi was travelling by car in northwest Yemen when a Hellfire missile struck Sunday, U.S. officials told reporters on condition of anonymity.

Area tribesmen and the Yemeni news agency SABA confirmed Mr. al-Harethi, al-Qaeda's chief operative in Yemen, was hit.

A close associate of Mr. bin Laden since the early 1990s, Mr. al-Harethi is believed by Washington to be responsible for the bombing attack on the warship USS Cole in Aden, Yemen two years ago. The five others killed were said to be low-level operatives.
