It's a different age...it has been for years now, but it took most of us--certainly myself--a while to recognize that fact.
"An eye for an eye" is now "A city for a city." That's not a game I want to see us--or anyone--play. If we must take pre-emptive military action to prevent it, then we must.
Just because other nations lack the power to do so doesn't preclude the US from taking action to protect itself. Decency and a willingness to defend oneself are not mutually exclusive.
It's not about pilfering resources, or world domination...it's about protecting our citizens and our international friends from ruthless fanatics who want to kill us.
Personally, I think the reason they want to kill us is that the Islamic world is in a period of desperation, and there is immense resentment and frustration over Western successes. Strict theocracy is a difficult and unforgiving master, I imagine, and the Islamists have chosen the easy path of destruction over the difficult path of self-improvement.
Not everyone agrees, of course...some beleive the Islamic world has been repressed by the west. While history offers some support for this assertion, the point is moot: violence against us must be decisively answered.
