My interest in the poor is to make sure they don't stay that way. This doesn't quite mesh with those politicians who like the poor just where they are: dissatisfied, envious, angry, and easy to sway. The last thing a Democrat wants to see is a poor person becoming prosperous. Heck, he might start voting Republican once he gets on the provider end of the wealth distribution stick. In socialist nations, EVERYONE is poor. Except the leadership, of course.
Before you get going on the terrible medical situation our poor are in, please check the services available through Medicaid, which is for all intents and purposes the free government medical care for the poor you are asking for. The reason leftists are not satisfied with this and want to spread it across society is that there are not enough poor voters to establish the iron grip on political power that being the sole provider of an essential service gives the State.
If you want the same service from your medical profession that you get from the DMV and the Post Office, and all medical professionals to be government employees, by all means move to Canada and knock yourself out. I'm sure they'd be happy to have you. But don't throw me into that shithole.
There are plenty of other people who have shown why free medical care winds up being worth what you pay for it, and I'm not going to rehash it here. Market forces always work, and if things are not rationed by markets and prices, they will be rationed by force, i.e. the government.
Although you might want to blame conservatives, the people of Oregon--not exactly a Republican hotbed--voted socialized medicine into the trash bin by a margin of about 4 to 1, which shows they thought it through a little more carefully than you have. Or maybe there really are four times as many conservatives as liberals in Oregon?
